Counting Crows @ the Myth

Adam Duritz & the boys did this tour with Jacob Dylan & the Wallflowers.   Remember the 1993 hit “Mr. Jones?”  Adam sings “I want to be Bob Dylan” – I thought for sure Jacob, Bob Dylan’s son would have at least joined the Crows on stage for a ceremonial song or a few words.

Counting Crows did a fun show this evening, they skipped a few of my old favorites but they did well on “Round Here”  the opener.  We also heard “Hospital”, “Start Again”, “When I dream of Michelangelo” and the Dead song “Friend of the Devil.” “Washington Square” was my second favorite tonight.  They closed with “Holiday in Spain”.  Damn, I wish they would have played “Somewhere Under Wonderland”.   The highlight this evening was Adam going to the piano for my old favorite “A Long December”, this is where you really appreciate band members Charlie Gillingham on accordion and David Immergluck on mandolin.

Adam & the boys always surprise with great musical collaborations but the old Joni Mitchell standard “Big Yellow Taxi” always gets me.  Vanessa Carlton has worked with Counting Crows on several songs but she almost steals the show at end of this song.  Vanessa’s voice on this old classic feels like a modern day Joni Mitchell.
